MSP BillBudBilling a call when another doctor phones you for advice (14021 or 01881)
The scenario
A rural GP calls you for advice on a patient with hyperkalemia. The call lasts 25 minutes and you never see the patient. Day shift.
How to bill it
01881 × 2 units (25 min) = $120.00. A second unit needs a call longer than 22 minutes. If you are CCFP-EM, 14021 ($69.64) pays more for calls up to 22 minutes, but at 25 minutes 01881 wins; FRCPC can only bill 01881. 14021 needs advice actually requested and given (not just arranging a transfer within 24 hours), the requester's practitioner number in "referred by", and start and end times. 14018 is only for when you call a specialist. What to watch for
You gave the advice rather than asking for it. How are units counted for this code?
